1) Requirements for Medical Directors
A medical director is a licensed physician that leads a healthcare or med spa facility and supervises procedures and has the power to delegate treatments to any practitioner. According to AmSpa, a medical director should have the following qualifications:
- Has received proper education, training, experience and demonstrates competence to administer and supervise every medical treatment
- Has the ability to oversee all procedures performed at the med spa
- Must make sure that the med spa’s practitioners are thoroughly trained and qualified to do the services
- Help ensure that the practice is equipped with all the necessary equipment and medical tools
- Must be able to create written protocols for each aesthetic treatment
2) Consultation, Diagnosis, and Treatment Plan
Before any cosmetic procedure, an initial examination of the patient is required and should be done by a licensed physician. During the consultation, the doctor will review the client’s medical history and perform a physical assessment of the intended treatment areas.
After examination, the physician will develop a diagnosis and provide a treatment plan provided that the patient has been cleared to be a good candidate for the procedure. The plan will specify the recommended course and timeframe of treatment, as well as instructions on the specific procedure.
Unless stated otherwise by the state laws, the physician may not delegate the examination, diagnosis, and development of a treatment plan to RNs, licensed vocational nurses, nurse practitioners, or medical assistants.
3) Supervision and Delegation

This is what is called delegation or the formal process where the doctor transfers the authority to provide treatment to another person. - General or indirect: The supervising physician is offsite, but is able to provide assistance and monitor the treatment via telecommunication.
- Direct: The supervising physician observes the procedure on site but they’re not necessarily accompanying the practitioner in the same room.
4) OSHA Regulations
Med spas are still considered medical or healthcare practices and thus they are still mandated to comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. This set of guidelines serves to provide a safe working environment and assure the practitioners’ and patient safety.
