Choosing Goggles for Your Laser

The right goggles are decided by two numbers printed on the device: the wavelength it emits and the optical density your protocol requires.

Wavelength comes first. A goggle only blocks the bands it is rated for, so a pair built for a 1064 nm Nd:YAG does nothing against a 532 nm KTP beam. Match the range on the goggle label to every wavelength the device can fire, including aiming beams.

Optical density (OD) is the second number. OD6 blocks a million times more light than OD1 at the rated band and is the usual choice for the operator standing closest to the handpiece. Lower OD eyewear suits observers and assistants further from the treatment field.

Fit matters for compliance. Goggles that pinch or fog get pushed up onto the forehead mid-treatment, so choose a frame with side shields that sits comfortably for a full session.
